Head winemaker and oldest daughter of the owners, Emily Pelton helped get Veritas Vineyards started. Emily attended Virginia Tech’s Fermentation and Science Program and joined the family endeavor full-time. According to Virginia Tech Magazine, Pelton says “It taught me to understand the science, the basic chemistry, the numbers, which makes the creative side a bit more easy because there’s less to worry about”.
Her goals in wine are quite simple. Peyton is committed to capturing the varietal character of the grapes. Quality is a major focus for Pelton and the entire Veritas family. Emily’s favorite wines are Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
Afton Virginia rests in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. It is home to the dignified University of Virginia – which, is one of Emily’s passions – which, was founded and designed by Thomas Jefferson in the 18th century as an architectural model for a university. In this region of Virginia Granite imparts acidity into the soil which may account for the higher acidity in the wines.
